You get something different out of every different type of flying. It depends what you’re after. I can’t think of a way to compare flying a helicopter to flying a hang-glider…just apples and oranges with their own unique benefits.

Here are the benefits as I see them:

Hang-Gliding: Alone with the wind, soaring as a bird would with nothing but the wind in your face and the world beneath you. Relatively inexpensive.

Ultra-light: Super short take-offs from any open territory and relatively inexpensive with less stringent legal concerns. Greater controllability and range than a hang glider or sailplane.

Gliders/Sailplanes: Comfort of an enclosed cockpit with greater control and maneuverability, relying on your knowledge and skill of air/wind currents to keep you aloft.

Helicopter: The freedom to do anything you want in relative comfort — stop, go up, go down, turn around, etc. Very sporty though…like zipping around the tree tops in a small sports car. Venturing into the world of the fixed-wing aircraft when necessary, yet still flying with so much capability in the same low altitude world as the birds is always a plus!

Fixed-wing: You can go faster and higher, have great control, and travel greater distances more easily.

Remember hot-air balloons too… Quiet, relaxing time spent with friends — above the ****** riding the air currents.

I’ll leave the downsides for you to figure out.

Each type of flying has it`s own joys.

In the Herc I liked the 60 degree banks.

In helos I loved the low level formation stuff.

In Hornets I loved the close in stuff where everything is happening so very fast.

I even love flying a 150.
